Speaking Engagements

Sep 12, 2014

I spoke at the Brevard County Public Schools Youth Leadership Conference in Viera, FL. About 30 different schools (Middle and High) were represented. Each school came to the conference with a group of 5 students and an advisor. The advisor was either a teacher, a counselor, a social worker, or a police officer associated with the school bullying program. After my presentation, several of the schools presented what they were doing for bullying prevention. It was really encouraging to see so many students taking leadership in preventing bullying in their schools.

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to speak to a group of staff members from the Minneapolis School District at Davis Center. At the end of my presentation we got into an interesting discussion about what the schools are doing today to prevent bullying as opposed to the 80s and the 90s when I was going through school. I think we came to a consensus that although there is certainly a much greater level of awareness in schools today, we are still far from being truly effective in preventing bullying. State of Minnesota is getting close to approving a legislation intended to prevent bullying by a student to facilitate a safe and conducive educational environment for all students. With this new legislation in place, all schools will have to put something in place in order to comply with the new requirements.

I just received confirmation that I will be speaking at the 2014 Annual Conference of the National Association of Social Workers – Pennsylvania Chapter (NASW-PA) in November. It will be another great opportunity to discuss impact of bullying on mental health with a large group of social workers in another state. Bullying is prevalent in all states – my goal is to reach as many states as possible so social workers, counselors, and other professionals (working with children of all ages) all over the country are fully aware of the devastating long-term impact of bullying so they can be more effective in their efforts to intervene when needed.
