I will be speaking at the New Jersey School Counselors Association conference in Long Branch, NJ, on October 11, 2015. This will be a presentation on my second book “Father Figure – My Mission to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse”. I am excited about this opportunity because school counselors can have a key role in the prevention process. Also, this will be my first visit to the state of New Jersey.
This presentation discusses the challenges involved in working with the “systems” in preventing a serious social issue in our country – “child sexual abuse (CSA)”. School counselors can have a significant role in prevention of CSA because, (1) children often feel more comfortable discussing this with trusted adults such as school counselors rather than family members, (2) many of our systems are more likely to respond to a concern brought in by a school counselor
Learning objectives for this presentation are as follows:
- Participants will be able to apply the knowledge gained from this presentation to assist at-risk children
- Participants will be able to develop strategies to work effectively with our systems in order to prevent child sexual abuse through multidisciplinary collaboration
- Participants will be able to assess needs of children who are being sexually abused or are concerned about being sexually abused
